CENIC and UC ANR team up to provide research scientists with super-fast Internet connectivity

The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Division (UC ANR) and the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) have connected key UC ANR facilities to CENIC’s ultra-fast 100Gbps research and education network, extending ultra-broadband capacity to UC researchers in rural sites across California.

CENIC and ESnet Announce Joint Cybersecurity Initiative

The Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) and the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) are pleased to announce a partnership between their organizations in the area of cybersecurity. The defense of information systems and networks is a necessary function of all modern enterprises, but scientific research organizations face particular challenges: support of open science and, increasingly, big-data science; diverse research portfolios; openness to experimentation across all intellectual domains; openness to collaborations within and across institutions – regionally, nationally, and internationally; and the need for seamless access to remote data-sources, scientific tools, and computational resources. The ESnet and CENIC communities share these challenges and are committed to improving the cybersecurity capacity of both organizations so that research is both open and secure.

Pacific Wave Announces World’s First Trans-Pacific 100-Gigabit R&E Network

Pacific Wave is pleased to announce that the Pacific Northwest Gigapop (PNWGP) has established the world’s first 100-Gigabit per second (Gbps) research and education (R&E) network link between Asia and the U.S., with related transit, peering, and exchange fabric. Pacific Wave will provide this 100Gbps capability to the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded International Research Network Connections (IRNC) TransPAC4 project, led by Indiana University. Pacific Wave recently received a five-year NSF IRNC award to serve as the U.S. Pacific Rim’s open and distributed interconnection, peering, and exchange fabric, including Software-Defined Exchange (SDX), Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and research DMZ capabilities.

Internet2 Names Two K-20 Education Leaders as Winners of 2015 Richard Rose Award

WASHINGTON, April 27, 2015—Internet2 today announced that Larry Gallery of NYSERNet and Rob Semper of the Exploratorium are this year’s winners of theRichard Rose Award. The award honors K-20 educators or technologists who have made demonstrable impacts on the K-20 community by extending advanced networking, content and services to the broader education community. Gallery and Semper will receive their awards tomorrow at the Internet2 Global Summit, taking place in Washington, D.C. April 26-30.
